Orthopaedic orthosis design

Structured light scanning is a reverse engineering method that can also be useful in medicine, specifically in orthopedics. We were asked to make a model of an orthopedic orthosis for a patient with a left shin disorder. We made a scan of the patient’s leg and then, based on the acquired scan image, we made a CAD model and designed an individual orthosis, which was printed on our 3D printers in FDM technology. The scanning of the leg was done with a Peel 2 handheld scanner.

On the left we can see the scanning result: a NURBS model of the orthosis for 3D printing.
